Being street smart goes beyond looking both ways before you cross the street. Talk to your kids about how to stay safe when they are riding their bikes, visiting the mall, and hanging out with friends.
Ensure they know how to be aware of their surroundings and what to do if a stranger approaches them. Require that they go places with a friend and keep you informed of their whereabouts.
Stress that they trust their instincts. If something feels wrong or unsafe, it probably is. On the other hand, they are probably not overreacting, and even if they are, who cares? It is better to be cautious than to take risks.
