A hand dryer roars to life in a public restroom. Someone starts chewing gum in the car. A balloon appears at a birthday party and suddenly the whole afternoon feels like a countdown to disaster. To one person, these are ordinary sounds. To someone with sound sensitivity, they can bring intense discomfort, fear, anger, or a desperate need to escape. Sensory anxiety can affect autistic children and adults, as well as some people with ADHD and other neurodivergent experiences. It is important to understand that not all sound sensitivity is the same. Hyperacusis can make everyday sounds feel unusually loud, uncomfortable, or painful. Helping with sensory anxiety starts before the panic button gets pushed. Notice patterns together. Which sounds are difficult? Is volume the problem, or is it one specific sound? Does the reaction become stronger in crowded places or at the end of a tiring day? Once families understand the pattern, they can plan without making the person feel like a problem to be managed. Noise reducing headphones or ear protection may be useful in predictably loud places, while access to a quieter room can provide a much needed break. At school, seating away from noisy equipment, advance warning before fire drills, or permission to step out of an overwhelming environment may help, depending on individual needs. Preparation can reduce uncertainty too. Before visiting a new place, talk about what sounds might be there and agree on a simple exit plan. A child can use a word, gesture, or text message that means, “I need a break now,” without having to explain everything while already overwhelmed. At home, recovery matters. After a noisy school day, some kids need twenty quiet minutes before questions, homework, chores, and the classic parental investigation known as “So, how was your day?” Let them settle first. Gentle breathing, familiar music, movement, dimmer lighting, or time with a favorite activity may help the nervous system recover. Avoid forcing repeated exposure to distressing sounds without professional guidance. If sound sensitivity is causing pain, severe anxiety, major avoidance, or difficulty participating in everyday life, speak with a qualified health professional. An audiologist can assess hearing and sound tolerance concerns, while other professionals may help with anxiety, sensory needs, or practical accommodations. The goal is not to make someone tolerate every sound with a smile. It is to understand what their nervous system is telling us and create enough safety, choice, and support for daily life to feel more manageable.
